EL BESO DE JUDAS: FOTOGRAFÍA Y VERDAD – JOAN FONTCUBERTA
INTRODUCCIÓN
El beso de Judas es un libro que te dará una visión más amplia y profunda sobre el concepto de fotografía, sobre su intencionalidad y sobre cómo ha evolucionado desde los primeros daguerrotipos, pasando por las primeras manipulaciones de fotografías hasta la objetividad y subjetividad del significado de la obra fotográfica.
Si eres como yo, que te has iniciado con la fotografía digital o, al contrario, comenzaste con fotografía analógica, en este libro encontraras el desarrollo conceptual, etimológico y social de la fotografía, de modo que nos regalan en poco más de 100 páginas, la capacidad de poder hablar con un poquito más de propiedad sobre la fotografía así como desarrollar nuestro sentido artístico y/o documental.
La primera cuestión que se te viene a la cabeza, es el título: “El beso de Judas”, ¿es un novela sobre fotografía? ¿Es una recopilación de obras y artistas religiosos? No, ninguna de esas preguntas tiene que ver con ello. El beso de judas es un símil con la fotografía. Con este gesto, que es la máxima expresión de cariño, afecto y amor que puede una persona tener hacia otra, Judas vende a Jesús. ¿Y qué relación tiene esto con la fotografía? Pues mucha, ya que la fotografía en sus inicios se adjudicó ser abanderada de la verdad, su fin último era documentar la realidad en una negativo, en un daguerrotipo, en un papel. ¿Pero qué tiene esto de cierto? Pues todo y nada.
La fotografía tiene la capacidad de acercar realidades, que por su propia naturaleza son lejanas al espectador, del mismo modo transmite información como transmite emoción. A lo largo de todo el libro se trata la temática de la verdad vs la mentira, en distintos contextos y aspectos, pudiendo resumir este dilema en el uso y la capacidad ética y moral del fotógrafo para mentir. Constantemente podremos leer frases y cuestiones como: “mentir bien y mentir mal” o “la fotografía miente siempre, miente por instinto, miente porque su naturaleza no le permite hacer otra cosa. Lo importante es cómo la usa el fotógrafo, a qué intenciones sirve”.
DESARROLLO Y CONTENIDO
En uno de sus capítulos, Pecados originales, encontramos un dilema en la que la fotografía se contempla como trabajo y, por consiguiente, cómo pecado. Los judíos celebran el Sabbat, para ellos la semana comienza el domingo y según su religión, los sábados no se trabaja ni se puede realizar ninguna actividad que produzca energía. Y del mismo modo que nos cuestionamos si la fotografía es pecado, nos surge la siguiente cuestión: ¿por qué las distintas religiones nos impiden realizar fotografías a través de prohibiciones a algunos objetos?
Nos encontramos ante una perspectiva negativa y desconfiada de la fotografía y, cómo va a ser costumbre, a lo largo del libro encontraremos la contraposición, si la luz es la Búsqueda de Dios, podemos entender que la fotografía en sí es también la búsqueda de la luz, de Dios. Esta contraposición se atribuye a una razón tan simple como lo es la distancia geográfica, dependiendo de en qué latitud o región vivas, tu concepto de Dios, de la luz y de la fotografía puede variar de pecado a virtud. Toda esta disyuntiva nos remonta a los pueblos más primitivos (en cuanto a fotografía se refiere) ya que el primer temor que estos sentían era que la imagen capturada por la cámara les robase el alma.
La respuesta a tanta prohibición podemos hallarla en una sola frase: control de la memoria.
Es en este instante cuando pasamos al siguiente capítulo, Elogio del Vampiro, en el que la memoria se une al espejo y comienza un batalla conceptual en la que se entiende el espejo como la verdad, la sinceridad… Pero también como un ocultismo de “insospechadas quimeras” que se esconden tras “las apariencias de un mundo asimétrico”.
Alrededor del espejo surge el dilema Narciso-Vampiro. ¿Os acordáis de Narciso? Tan enamorado de su imagen que no podía dejar de verse reflejado en las superficies. Y el vampiro, todo lo contrario, anhela el poder ver su rostro en un reflejo, en un espejo, ya que no tiene alma. ¿Os imagináis un vampiro narcisista? ¡Qué locura!. Pues bien, alrededor, como decía de este dilema se entiende el desarrollo en de la fotografía a lo largo de la década de los 70 en el ámbito de dos estilos fotográficos muy bien diferenciados: documental y artístico. Y en este proceso vemos cómo pasamos a través de distintos referentes de la Historia de la Fotografía que comenzaron con cambios sutiles en la manera de producir fotografía documental hasta la creación de rostros totalmente inventados en busca de escenificar el ideal de perfección, por ejemplo, de Estados Unidos.
A estas alturas, los cimientos del concepto de Fotografía se encuentra mucho más asentados, dando el salto al siguiente capítulo, Videncia y evidencia , tratando el concepto de memoria, ese don tan preciado que nos permite recordar los acontecimientos más importantes que experimentamos en nuestra vida. A través de una referencia a la mitología griega, Joan Fontcuberta nos muestra la concepción de que la fotografía no limita en nuestra capacidad de almacenamiento y retención de información, haciéndonos confiarnos y no asimilando internamente lo que vemos. Uno de los padres de la fotografía, Meyer, nos libera a través del pragmatismo nos libera de esa duda: “Fotografiar para recordar”.
La fotografía documentalista se apropia del concepto de evidencia, o no. ¿A caso un paisajista, retratista o artista abstracto, al crear sus obras al más puro estilo Fine Art, no documentan una realidad? Al menos la realidad que ellos perciben, sí. De este modo alcanzamos la siguiente conclusión: toda fotografía es evidencial, simplemente hemos de preguntarnos si nuestro fin es evidenciar algo conciso y directo o la más amplia ambigüedad.
Los peces de Enoshima nos ilustra la dicotomía de la fotografía entre la verdad documentalista y la verdad ambigua de modo que nos revela la construcción de la fotografía como memoria. Asimismo, el entra el retoque en contexto, con la premisa máxima de la sutilidad: un retoque es retoque cuando este no se aprecia.
Entre tanta cuestión, entre tanta respuesta, surge una que nunca me había planteado y que personalmente me cautivó y que dice algo así: ¿qué es el fotograma? ¿Es la luz que impregna la película o el sensor? o, por otro lado, ¿es la sombra que impide que la luz tiña de blanco la película/sensor? Estas cuestiones os la dejo para vosotros.
El siguiente capítulo, La ciudad fantasma, nos muestra el desarrollo de una fotografía estrictamente documentalista, a una fotografía que otorgaba mayores licencias interpretativas, en la que se primaba la experiencia propia del fotógrafo frente a la realidad fotografiada, dando lugar a una nueva lucha: Documentalismo objetivo vs Documentalismo subjetivo. Todos estos cambios se ven reflejados en la intencionalidad y el mensaje oculto, su interpretación objetiva y su interpretación subjetiva. Así se abre las puertas a distintas metodologías de trabajo, como la Teoría de los Errores, en la que el defecto se convierte en virtud: ligeros desenfoques, drip-ping o el ruido que aparece con las nuevas tecnologías, como forma de personalizar una obra y enviar un mensaje, una interpretación… Todo a través de un error convertido en virtud.
Verdades, ficciones y dudas razonables, un capítulo polémico, en el que Joan Fontcuberta, nos pone un ejemplo de lo sucedido durante la II Guerra Mundial en Guernica, situando este punto histórico como el inicio de una nueva corriente que hizo que artistas de la talla del mismísimo Pablo Picasso, comenzasen una lucha entre los sueños y la realidad, erigiendo un monumento alrededor de su obra, transformándola en un documento. A lo largo de este camino surge una nueva consciencia documental, personificada en Meyer, quien tras más de 2 décadas de trabajo documentalista comienza a promulgar con todo lo contrario. ¿Por qué? Porque es un movimiento revolucionario. Según Meyer, solamente cambian sus herramientas y procedimientos, pero no el fin, documentar.
¿Está permitido el retoque en la fotografía documental? ¡Sí! Siempre y cuando se resalte y no se distorsione la imagen, el fin del retoque ha de ser enfatizar, no enmascarar. En este entorno surge una nueva batalla a través de dos conceptos: Génesis de la forma fotográfica vs. Ética de la forma fotográfica. La manipulación no está exenta de valor moral pero lo realmente importante es el fin, sujeto al juicio crítico a través de su eficacia.
CONCLUSIÓN
He de confesaros que me he dejado mis dos capítulos favoritos sin contar, pues considero que debéis leerlos vosotros mismos. Al igual que los resumido en este artículo he intentado que sea manera más objetiva posible, no he podido obviar cierto sesgo subjetivo.
